The Highland Screen Network is a new initiative to increase access to screen and cinema in the region, particularly in communities that may be underserved. We’re excited to share the joy of film and to celebrate its benefits as a cultural resource and way of bringing people together. Over the next six months, our new team member Sophie will be researching interest, models and possibilities!

Created by The Touring Network and Regional Screen Scotland, the Highland Screen Network will join a portfolio of networks across Scotland as part of A Cinema Near You (CNY), a scheme that works to increase cinema provision across the country while engaging with the widest range of audiences.

Screen Networks offer support, information and activities to increase regular screenings and advise organisations who would like to start showing films. Everyone from DVD-based community groups to full-time exhibitors can get involved. A focus for us will be looking at what’s needed to help a return to live screenings after the unprecedented challenges of the last 18 months. All Networks operate differently and can offer a range of support from information sharing, meetings and sessions, exhibition advice (licensing, programming), building partnerships and collaborations, exploring shared services and keeping up to date on national initiatives.

Initial results from a CNY survey undertaken earlier this year, showed a depth of exhibition and a range of interested groups across the Highlands. We have started talking to the responders and other parties and hope to find out what would be most helpful, how we can share information and possible future activities.

Sophie Crabb has a background working for a range of film and arts organisations, from the Celtic Media Festival, UK Film Council to Vintage Glasgow. Originally from Sutherland, she’s worked to get films made, shown and enjoyed in a variety of locations. She’s looking forward to hearing about the films people love and finding out what support could help make screenings easier across the Highlands.
