Case Study on Network Meet-ups / Fiona Shaw

BY: FIONA SHAW, Promoter in Oban

FOR: Networking with local members at The Rockfield Centre, Oban in April 2019.

“I’m Fee Shaw and most recently as Events Manager at Dunollie Museum, Castle, and Grounds, I attended The Touring Network’s Network Meet-up in Oban. I found the event to be both enjoyable and productive.  It was a great way for so many of us to meet others in similar roles who we might not have yet met face to face.

It was a very relaxed meeting but I felt we covered a lot of ground and think if the meetings could happen more regularly that would be beneficial to all.

It can often be a pretty isolated role when you work outside the big cities, so meet-ups like the one I attended help bridge that gap.

I have been a member of The Touring Network in a few different places and roles I have worked in, and I would always recommend to other relevant businesses that they too should become a member if they aren’t already. The team are always extremely responsive and bring to the table a vast amount of experience and knowledge which I have always felt they shared freely rather than holding on to and is sometimes the case in the industry.

Attending the meet-up itself was a very smooth process. I was alerted to it happening with plenty of notice, booked my spot nice and easily via Eventbrite, and simply went along to The Rockfield Centre which is a good central point also. The discussions we had were informal but the team from the Touring Network were able to prompt with some good springsboards. Once we got started though there wasn’t a shortage of topics to be discussed.

I think a lot of what I found useful was the reassurance that these issues are happening to other promoters also but that there are also clever fixers possible.

I plan on catching up with some of the others who attended and visiting their venues when the time allows and I think that shows how comfortable the meet-ups made us all feel.

At every Touring Network event I have been to, I can say without hesitation, that I have gained insights and made connections that have proven useful time and time again over the years.”
