Jo Philby Band
18 August, 2014 @ 8:00 pm
£10
With her crystal clear, soulfully expressive vocals, Jo Philby is one of the most endearing folk singers to emerge from Orkney in recent years.
A lifelong singer, originally from the south of England, Jo’s early inspiration stemmed from the English and Irish traditions, however over a decade living and working in Orkney now sees her cite singers from the modern Scottish folk scene as equal sources of influence, as well as country and bluegrass musicians. As such, her full band line-up and second CD ‘Beneath the Starry Sky’ bring a much fuller roots sound having been recorded in Orkney & Nashville.
Jo’s current line-up consists of superb Orcadian musicians, Aidan Moodie (guitar) and Graham Rorie (mandolin/fiddle) & Elaine Grieve (harmony vocals/guitar/mandola). For their tender years both Aidan & Graham‘s musicianship is beyond their years. They are both going to study music this September at the conservatoire in Glasgow. Elaine’s vocal harmonies work beautifully with Jo’s rich, earthy tones.
Jo’s affectingly understated mix of originals and covers, sweetly accompanied and harmonised by her four-piece band (The Scotsman) Beautiful vocals and harmonies combine for a CD all will enjoy (The Orcadian)
