Scottish Opera is the national opera company and largest performing arts organisation in Scotland and was founded in 1962 by Sir Alexander Gibson ‘to lay the treasures of opera at the feet of the people of Scotland’.
Scottish Opera produces world-class work at every scale. The Company regularly gives full-length, fully staged opera performances in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness, and tours to all four corners of the country – from the Shetland Islands and the Western Isles to Stranraer and Kelso, and everywhere in between. This ensures performances are within reach of as many of the country’s very dispersed population as possible.
The annual Pop-up Opera and Opera Highlights tours are some of the most extensive touring programmes of any European opera company and a much-valued contribution to Scotland’s cultural and artistic life.
The Company’s longstanding, extensive and integrated Outreach & Education programme, is designed for people of all ages, social backgrounds and abilities, and supports the development of their personal creativity, interest in opera and health and wellbeing. It includes an annual tour to around 120 schools with over 9,000 pupils taking part.
