a Borderline & Hirtle production
In the early 18th century, 17-year-old Isabel and her minister husband arrive on the remote island of Hirta, also known as St Kilda.
Their encounters with the island’s inhabitants, especially the disturbing Rachel of Grange, change their lives forever in this captivating tale.
A real historical figure, Lady Grange was involved in a bitter divorce; her actions led to her erstwhile husband being successfully tried for treason. He, in turn, had her kidnapped and incarcerated on various remote Scottish islands. Lady Grange clings with tragic dignity to the two things she has left in the world – a consuming rage and an old straw chair.
Sue Glover’s contemporary classic gives a voice to Lady Grange and a world of exploited or alienated women whose identity has been determined by their domestic role or social status in hypocritical patriarchal societies.
“One of the finest plays of the modern Scottish theatre. It is raw and drough, warm and tender, funny enough to make your heart dance and moving enough to steal it away… ”
