Crooked Timber is a theatre company set up in 2009 by Gemma Khawaja. The company is based in Cromer, Norfolk.
The company specialises in producing small scale touring shows for family audiences, combining traditional storytelling and puppetry with innovative shadow effects and video.
Gemma Khawaja is an accomplished performer specialising in children’s theatre and puppetry. Gemma is also a singer and guitarist and has worked nationally as a musician, puppeteer and performer for leading theatre companies touring the UK.
Gemma’s interest in puppet theatre began at university. Upon completing an Honours degree in Drama 2001, Gemma furthered her skills in puppetry by learning traditional puppet making and performance techniques at Norwich Puppet Theatre.
Gemma’s experience as a performer for UK based children’s theatre companies combined with her puppet making skills, led her to explore and begin devising her own original creative work and to set up Crooked Timber Theatre company.
From 2011 to 2014 Gemma was the Education and Outreach officer at Norwich Puppet Theatre she recently returned back to full time performing and is currently solo touring Norwich Puppet Theatre’s Pied Piper show in addition to her own work. Gemma now divides her time between being part of Norwich Puppet Theatre’s freelance creative team and continuing the work of Crooked Timber Theatre.
